While requesting His Holiness to continue to visit Ladakh, he declared that the Ladakhi people’s gift to him on his birthday was to try to put what he has advised into practice. Tsewang Thinles announced that in accordance with His Holiness’s advice the LBA has instituted classes in language and culture out of a sincere wish to ensure the survival of the Buddha’s teachings. He rejoiced that His Holiness looked so well and thanked everyone present for coming to celebrate his birthday. President of the Ladakh Buddhist Association Tsewang Thinles opened proceedings paying homage to the Buddha and saluting His Holiness, Ganden Trisur Rinpoche, Drikung Chetsang Rinpoche, Thiksey Rinpoche other tulkus, members of the Sangha community, and dignitaries including President of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) Dr Lobsang Sangay, MP Thubten Tsewang, Leh MLA Rigzin Jora, MLC Tsering Dorje Lakrook, Chief Executive Councillor of Ladakh Area Hill Development, Chief Executive Councillor of Ladakh Area Hill Development Council (CEC, LAHDC) Gyal P Wangyal, Tibetans and Ladakhis. Everyone stood for the Indian and Tibetan national anthems, which were followed by a song to celebrate His Holiness’s birthday. Coming out onto the stage in front he walked to the north and south corners to closely greet members of the crowd estimated to number 25,000. Reaching the pavilion, he lit a butter-lamp before the statue of the Buddha. He stopped frequently to greet and speak to the hundreds of well-wishers who lined both sides of the road. Once the prayers were over, in a demonstration of robust good health, His Holiness walked the 500m from the Phodrang to the Shewatsel Teaching Pavilion unaided. The oracles of Dorje Yamakyong and Nyenchen Thangla both paid their respects in trance. He came down to the prayer-hall at his residence in Shewatsel Phodrang at 7 o’clock and joined prayers for his long life and well-being attended by personal staff and close attendants.
